Raw Edges;

I have been researching Raw Edges Design Studio for my college work and I am astonished by their ingenious design work! I think that their natural flair for design and their different approaches combined have created a excellent design team. They create quirky furniture, installations and other products and they all have a certain unique-ness about them.
I do find that some of their designs are not too practical, such as the "Volume" chairs which are made out of patterned paper or wallpaper and filled with expandable foam. The folded structure acts as a mould and as upholstery. Once it is shaped the chair is steady enough to hold its form, however I think that to judge this you would have to see it in person.

Doing some reseach for college and came across this design website. It allows for you to buy designer furniture and also lets you know information about different designers! It has been useful for information on Matthew Hilton especially.

Matthew Hilton - British Designer

All Chairs

Continuing research for my Theory and Context module, I have to research British Designers. Matthew Hilton has been very successful with his design career and I have found his work very interesting. He focuses mainly on furniture design and I like his approach to the chairs in the image above. I think that the different shapes added to a classic chair effectively work and the modern twist of creating a different back or having a tripod leg set up really stand out. A lot of his work is very organic and his edges are curved, I think this looks aesthetically good and effectively work.

He was elected a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 2005. In 2007 Matthew launched his company Matthew Hilton Limited.

Is Ikea the new Bauhaus?

Currently studying a module on Art history, and came across this interesting article on Bauhaus and if IKEA is the new model.

The article is really interesting and defines how the Bauhaus has influenced life today and how it can be found in the style of IKEA furniture.
